So I have a couple threads here about getting my axim setup better mostly because I'm not sure of the overall longevity of it. I've been seriously considering replacing it with an Itouch because its smaller, has better battery life, and provides 90% of the features I use it for. I'm a medical student so I use a PDA for drug references and stuff that has cross platform availability. Size is important because it needs to fit easily on a belt clip or in my white coat with all the other stuff I have to carry for a given clinical day. Right now the Axim resides in a Rhinoskin case which I love because in the hospital the axim suffers alot of bumps, jarring, squishing, and drops in the heat of the moment.
As I can see it the only thing my Axim wins on is the GPS software that I haven't seen on an Itouch. I mean if I'm going to finish pimping out my Axim I want to make sure its worthwhile because the battery is typically dead by the end of my day and thats without using Wi-Fi. Axim: Windows, GPS, bluetooth keyboard (that I never use) Needs w/ minimal cost: Extended Battery ($25), New Case ($25) Itouch: Battery, Memory, easier MP3, Size What else should I be considering? If I consider using the Axim for more recreational stuff like music of movies, how long will the battery last? Last edited by fbskiracer; 04-05-2009 at 06:00 AM.. |

An advantage of the Ax is that you can swap batteries you cant with a touch. I carry 8 standard batteries in a Case Logic zip up mp3 softcase that has a belt loop onthe back. An ext battery adds more bulk than I like. Id recommend the Proporta/Innopocket magnesium case also front flip slim much easier to hold also.

if you use Skyscape apps - there are still far fewer med apps for ipod as compared to your axim. Try to play some of the ppc games with the ipod - no 4 way directional - game had to be re-invented for the gyroscope.

I have an Ax as well as an iTouch. My two biggest complaints with the iTouch are 1) You can't take notes as easily as you can with the Ax and stylus (1 finger typing vs writing), and 2) You can't save additional files on an iTouch.
I definitely use my Ax for storing programs and files that I need for work. The iTouch just cant "iTouch this" expandabilty that the Ax has! I also recently purchased a couple of the extended batteries for my Ax. The lifespan is SOOOO much better, I can now use it for GPS in the car without needing the power cable. |

As for the Skyscape apps, of the 15 or so I have, only 2 aren't Itouch compatible. According to Skyscape they expect full ipod compatibility soon for most apps.
I can buy extra batteries the problem is where to carry them. Considering the things I carry, space is always an issue wether it be a white coat or a pair of scrubs with a chest pocket and butt pocket. I'm not using the axim for games or for music at the moment but I'm still draining the battery days I use it. I would prefer to be able to use it for music or something in my down times and late lectures and or late attending would be nice. I might just check the return policy on an itouch from best buy to test drive it. Last edited by fbskiracer; 04-06-2009 at 04:54 PM.. |
