Smile Complete List of WM6.1 Freeware?

All the sites I have found so far with WM6.1 software are poorly designed! Is there a simple site with a list of freeware for this gadget?

Things that annoy me:
- List with 10 items per page (COME ON!)
- Full Descriptions in the lists (How about one-liners!)
- Dead links to third parties (CACHE the packages damn it!)
- EXE installers for WM6.1 apps. (Give me CABs!)
- Trials and Demos mixed into the Freeware
- Warez (I won't touch it)
- Zipped or RAR'd archives with the apps in them (Build a CAB!)

Freeware programmers impress me more so than Open Source teams and large companies creating Pay-Per-PPC apps. If I find something that is Freeware, and I can't live without it, I usually donate. (ReNamer, mp3Tag, etc)

Is there such a site?

af3 - I've wondered how I could change something in a CAB and then re-pack it into a CAB again. I'll bet you know. What tool is best to pack things into a cab? And what's the "autorun" file convention inside a CAB that allows WinMob to start an install routine?

I am quite new to WM6.1, but I do know how to get .CABs out of .EXEs

You will have to plug in your device, install the EXE, but then go to %master%\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync (%master% is usually C: ) to get the packages IN MOST CASES. In other cases, pay attention to where the EXE setup/installer puts the files on your computer. For example, Joe's Tools (fake name) installed to C:\Program Files\Joe's Tools For PPC\ and the CAB was in that folder along with the uninstall program.

I am aware of that method, but it does not work with 80% of the ones I have tried. If one were to encounter a InstallShield that would open, the contents of the CAB would display. If one were to extract the cab, and rebuild it... would one choose Deflate, LZX or Quantum compression?

I must inspect a CAB that has been made by someone else that is confirmed working.

Those Install-Through-PC-For-PPC jobs really junk up my start menu and Program Files folder, not to mention the regisry.

There are a huge number of freeware and shareware sites for Windows Mobile including Windows Marketplace. I have collected a bit more than 4GB of free programs over the last year or so that I am compiling into a DVD of useful ones. This does not include my GPS mapping programs (Garmin, iGo, Route 66, & TomTom) that run 4GB to 6GB each. The one I personally use is Route 66.

There are 2 CAB utilities that I use, both from OCP Software (cabwuz and WinCE cab manager). The programs themselves are a little larger than the attach utility will allow here. I have attached a couple of pdf files I created from the website that explains them.

The cabwiz refered to is part of the Windows Mobile Software Development Kit from Microsoft.
Attached Files
File Type: pdf CabWuz.pdf (111.3 KB, 19 views)
File Type: pdf WinCE Cab Manager.pdf (38.4 KB, 17 views)

If you wanted to add something to a cab or remove something from it, then you would need to extract it (which you can actually do with WinZip) make the mods and then repack it.

I've yet to find such a listing anywhere, though a nice place to start is to hit aximsite/mobilitysite and look for threads like this one:

http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/p...ree-stuff.html

Or this one (which I need to read through more thouroughly):

Thanks guys ... I wasn't clear enough. I know how to get CABs "OUT" of EXE's and how to Open/Unpack CAB contents -- but what I need to know is how do you BUILD/"re-pack" a CAB? In a few cases, I would like to edit the install routine in a CAB (e.g. to eliminate a redundant multiple install of another CF.Net or MSSQLCE version), or simply to make my own tweaked CAB installer. TDBAER seems to be getting to the issue ... "make the mods and repack it" -- but isn't there some freeware to do it?

7-Zip opens various .EXE setup packages (even .MSIs and .MSPs in some cases!) and UltimateZip can create .CABs, and I think they are freeware...
